Nicosia Community Church predates the modern nation of Cyprus, being established in 1953, when Cyprus was still a British protectorate. Several Cypriot Christians invited the Church of Scotland to establish an English-speaking Reformed congregation in Nicosia. The Church of Scotland, Europe's only national Presbyterian church, traces its roots back to mission activity by Coptic Orthodox missionaries in Scotland and Ireland in the 2nd century. Its Celtic roots echo much Orthodox theology and its form of worship is based on the Church Fathers. Its status as the national church of Scotland was established in the 16th century. The "National Kirk" as it is called, has a tradition of medical, educational and theological links with Cyprus and the Middle East dating back to the 1840's. After Cyprus became independent in 1960, Nicosia Community Church, in order to better serve the people of Cyprus, became independent from the Church of Scotland. Today we are an entirely self supporting Protestant church with no formal denominational ties.
